Service Project Sunday

Today, instead of going to church, we were the church!

It was service project Sunday for our church today. Instead of a regular worship service, people worked on upstairs rooms and landscaping at church, clean up around Swan Lake, and painting at an elementary school. It was a fun and fulfilling day!

Landscaping off to a good start...

I headed over to help paint a map of the United States at the elementary school. First off was the prep work...

Basically, we made a big dot-to-dot puzzle with sidewalk chalk. Then just connected the dots.

I think we all got quite a geography lesson!

Alaska looks pretty good!

See what I mean? Connect the dots. Simple as that. ;)

The kids had fun with the chalk, too...

Elise likes to draw aliens...

The map outline is complete, numbered, and ready for paint!

Trevor has been really into drawing mazes.

Time to paint!

Caitlin wanted to take some pictures. Looks like she had fun. :)

It's coming together!

Painting the walk-way that goes the perimeter of the blacktop...

Taking a hot dog and sloppy joe lunch break!

Robert came from landscaping to bring lunch and got himself into helping paint the foursquare square...

My caption for this photo?
"If I close my eyes, maybe the camera won't see me!"

The finished map!

This one shows Hawaii, too. The sun was where Hawaii was originally at... until there was a paint spill. And check out Elise. She decided she wanted to paint, too. Unfortunately, she painted outside of the lines...

Back at the church, the landscaping came a long way...

Inside the church, the upstairs bathrooms are coming closer to completion! At least the floors are, anyway...

And the youth room has some new lights and is ready for drywall...

After checking out the progress out at the church, a few of us drove around Swan Lake to pick up all the trash we could find. Some people went to their designated areas earlier, too.

We also found some pretty cute caterpillars...

And I couldn't resist taking a picture of this Sunday driver...

Tonight was also movie night at church. They're showing "Letters to God." I've been looking forward to seeing it, but since it's a school night, I thought we'd better get home for bed & bath since we're beyond tired ;). At least it's an instant watch in Netflix, so maybe I'll get to watch it tonight anyway.

I can't put into words how blessed I felt today. What a great way to start off the new week!

I just now realized that I haven't posted Sierra's volleyball pictures! Oops! I will try to get that done tomorrow, but we'll see. There's a lot of work to do at Robert's office in preparation for the ribbon cutting next week!

Though I loved your cute iheartfaces post I had to comment on this one.
LOVED seeing you BE the church to your community. My hubby was in ministry for the last 18 years. He was a head pastor for the last five in for a little church plant. We joined with another church plant in June. We are all too familiar when people mistake the building they walk into on a Sunday as being the church. And they argue about the silliest things over the facade but yet do not get that they themselves are the BODY of Christ, the church made flesh in this world. Breaks my heart. I have such a passion for this! Soooooo beautiful to see you living out what God intended for the church to be: his people, allowing Christ to live his life through them to touch the world.
God Bless, and big hugs!

Where did you get that???? My husband is a youth pastor and he takes the youth group kids to do service projects around town. Can you give me the link to that shirt? Thanks!
I live in IA too...where are you?
